Here are excerpts of a press release from the City of Corpus Christi:

At 10 a.m. Thursday, December 6, Mayor Nelda Martinez and the City of Corpus Christ Water Department will announce implementation of Stage 2 of the City’s Drought Contingency Plan.

“Today, as a result of continuing drought conditions, we are notifying residents and customers that we are implementing Stage 2 of our Drought Contingency Plan,” stated Mayor Martinez.  “Conservation is our least expensive and most available option for protecting our water supply.  We are asking everyone to do their part to conserve water.”

Certain voluntary water conservation measures now become mandatory as Stage 2 is implemented.  Those provisions include:

 1) No irrigation or lawn watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. unless an individual is using a hose by hand or a bucket;

2) Irrigation must not result in water-run off or overflow into storm drains;

3) Water may not run constantly through a tap, hydrant, or valve and

4) Defective plumbing which results in water loss or leaks must be repaired.

Certain conditions apply for large parcels (5 or more acres) which must operate under a watering plan approved by the City of Corpus Christi. Also, commercial nurseries must use hand-held devices, drip or sprinkler systems to irrigate stock. Violations of these provisions may result in citations not to exceed $500 per day.

             The City of Corpus Christi will begin enforcing these provisions on Monday, December 17, 2012.  Property owners and commercial operators are encouraged to test their irrigation and other plumbing systems during working hours to ensure any problems are identified and corrected.  City Code Enforcement, Water Department staff, and other city employees will be identifying potential violations.  Code Enforcement Officers will provide notifications at the location of the violation. Door hangars will provide notification in the event the violation occurs after hours or when no one is available.
