Making Strides events are noncompetitive walks ranging in distance from 3 to 5 miles. The event unites people of all ages with a common goal to fight breast cancer and save lives. Chances are, you’ve been affected by breast cancer in some way, and Making Strides gives you the power to fight back and make a difference. Most Making Strides events have no registration fee and no fundraising minimum. We’ve provided fun and easy-to-use online tools that allow you to personalize your experience. Whether you upload a photo, tell your story, or add your fundraising thermometer to your Facebook page, you can make this experience your own and share with others your reason for making strides.

Summer Youth Golf Clinics & Camps

What plans do you have for your kids this summer? We have plenty to choose from to satisfy kids and parents alike. The Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department provides quality, structured and affordable programs for youth that instill life-long leisure skills AND THEY ARE FUN! Lozano Jr. Golf Camps are offered for ages 8-17 (age 18, if returning to high school or senior year) for beginners and intermediate players at Lozano Golf Center, 4401 Old Brownsville Road. Instruction, tailored to each individual student’s ability, will be provided by two of the finest PGA teaching professionals in South Texas, Marti Longoria-Potts and Dennis Burns. These three-day camps will be offered Tuesday-Thursday on June 22-24, July 13-15 and August 10-12, 2009. Cost is $40 per student per week (includes instruction, range balls and a free round of golf on the Executive 9 course). Each camp is limited to 15 students. Pan American Jr. Golf Clinics are offered FREE of charge for youth ages 6-18. Lozano Golf Center and the Pan American Golf Association (PAGA) have teamed up again to offer this very successful program. Golf Clinics are available every Saturday in June 2009, from 9am-11am. All skill levels are welcome. The PAGA is a national golf association with a chapter in Corpus Christi dedicated to introducing disadvantaged youth to the game of golf through free instruction and tournament play. EXCITING RECREATION FOR YOUTH THIS SUMMER!

The City of Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department promises a spectacular summer of quality, affordable, and fun programs. It provides an environment to enrich children’s lives and encourage positive lifestyle choices. The Department will again provide the "Fun Kids" Program for children ages 6-12 at school sites and recreation centers. It will operate June 15-August 7, 2009, Monday-Friday (Monday-Thursday at school sites) from 11am-4pm. The remaining available sites are Lindale Recreation Center, Oso Recreation Center, and Chula Vista Elementary. This program offers open campus, come and go recreation activities in a generally supervised environment. Sports programs include instruction and games in basketball, soccer, volleyball and softball. Programming will also include arts and crafts, outdoor and indoor game tournaments, swimming, music, movies and field trips to area attractions. Cost is $5/week/child. Free lunch and an afternoon snack are provided. REGISTRATION: Thursday, June 11, 2009 from 1pm-4pm at the program site your child will attend (space permitting). For more information, call 826-3460.

City Boards, Commissions, Committees

If you’ve ever wanted to do more in helping map your community’s course for the future, then you may want to consider volunteering to serve on one of the City of Corpus Christi’s Boards, Commissions or Committees.
In order to be considered for appointment to a committee, an applicant must be a resident of Corpus Christi at the time they apply and throughout their time of service. Appointments are approved by the Corpus Christi City Council.
In all, more than 400 residents serve on about 50 different City Boards, Commissions and Committees.
